Music Magazine Front Cover 2

Front Cover Draft 1

Photos I liked...

I like this photo because of the low angle shot. I would be able to use this on the front cover because they represent the folk/indie/rock genre. They do this through the clothes they are wearing and the positive confident attitude they are resembling.

I would use this photo in either the contents page or the double page spread, because they are not looking at the camera but also because they are playing the instruments. Through their emotions, there is a connotation of passion.

Again similar to the last photo I would use this for the contents page or the double page spread. This is again because they are playing the music and look focused doing it.

I like this photo and I am strongly considering this photo for the front cover. The perceived front man, is more prominent in the framing as he is closer to the camera. Also they are facing the camera which is a convention of front covers. Again their emotions represent their genre of indie/rock/folk, they appear to be very confident.

I like this photo because it includes their instruments. I also like it because they are looking down the camera and continue to represent the genre of music with their expressions.

I think this is a good photo because again they are looking down the camera, and again through emotions they are portraying themselves to be confident and arrogant.

I was going to use this photo as a thumbnail on the front cover. Again I like it because the dark colours of their clothing and because they have their hoods up is quite rebellious and representative of rock culture.

L.I.I.A.R Analysis of other music magazines (part 3)

L.I.I.A.R

Language:

From the masthead 'iDJ' the genre of music is quite clear. 'iDJ' already shows that the genre is dance music as thats what DJ's do. As the majority of the front cover is black, the masthead being white stands out and is therefore very effective and a strong colour. The main image of the band Duck Sauce, represents them to be very laid back and casual. This a connotation of their stance and clothing. This front cover contains more conventions of a front cover than the other two magazines. Along the bottom of the cover there is a competition and a barcode etc. Yet again the majority of the other front cover features are on the left third, mainly the other cover lines as well as the tagline "Duck Sauce!" which accompanies the main image.

Institution:

iDJ magazine was bought by publisher Chris Kempster after 3 months of existance. The magazine was originally a " shady, unfocused, teen-orientated, superclub-obsessed title". It became "one of the world’s most respected dance music titles." The publisher of this magazine is quite small and independent.

Ideology:

The front cover consists mainly of the colour black. This correlates with the the colour the 'decks' a large part of DJ music. The artists are portrayed to be quite arrogant. This is conveyed to us through their pose. One of the artists is crossed armed and the other is hands in pockets. These poses connote arrogance and confidence which is a quality they are suggesting is important in dance music. The image represents that in this genre of music most artists are young, and that the magazine represents their music and all current dance artists. The orange writing can be linked with the animal theme on the front cover. One of the cover lines mentions "catz", orange can be associated with tigers and cats. Also the front cover has a theme of animals as it feautures a monkey and the band are called Duck Sauce.

Audience:

The target audience is for all those interested in modern dance music. This is represented through the main image and some of the cover lines: "Duck Sauce!" who are a modern band, and "All the latest DJ kit" latest implying new. However this particular issue is also aimed at fans of the magazine who have read it throughout the years.

Representations:

The pose produced by the artists (Duck Sauce) in the main image, particularly connotes arrogance. This is represented through the crossed arms and hands in pocket stance. Their clothing also represents a rebelious side. This is implied through the leather jackets and sunglasses which are sterotypically associated with rebellion.

L.I.I.A.R Analyse of other music magazine (part 2)

L.I.I.A.R

Language:

This particular magazine 'Uncut' is aimed at fans of 'classic/retro' music. We know this because the original image was black and white which connotes that this is a picture of an old band from a past era. The main tagline which is linked to the main image is The Kinks, anybody with any music knowledge will know these are a band from the past. All of the other cover lines on the front cover are about other artists from the past e.g. 'Springsteen'. The masthead on this front cover is red. Again red connotes passion but it is mainly used because it is a very bold colour. Uncut is a short and memorable title. Most of the other conventions of a magazine front cover appear on the left third, including a quote from the interview with lead singer of The Kinks Ray Davies "I sound crazy. So be it...".

Institution:

The institution/publisher of this magazine of this magazine is the same as NME. It is IPC Media. On the IPC Media website it says:  "Uncut is the UK’s most authoritative music and movie magazine. Uncut celebrates all that is great in rock and film, both new and old, cult and classic". IPC Media are again a very large company. They publish magazines of many different genres. A couple of other examples are 'World Soccer' and 'TV and Satellite'.

Ideology:

From the front cover you would connote that the morals and ideology of Uncut magazine is that they are into promoting all things cult and classic. This is implied by the cover lines and pictures of which the majority feature classic music artists. You would assume that the main target audience are that of the older generation. This is mainly again down to the mention of classic bands. One of the main colours is yellow. This is used for the main tagline and the colour of the clothes one of the band members is wearing. Yellow has a connotation of happiness, which portrays that this magazine is promoting this age of music. It's saying when this music was in the public eye, it was a good time for music.

Audience:

The target audience are fans of classic/cult music fans. The IPC Media website says how Uncut is great for celebrating all that is great in rock. Therefore the magazine is clearly for fans of rock music particularly classic rock. Also through the use of font which is classic and old fashioned you can connote that it is for fans of classic/old fashioned music.

Representation:

The Kinks who are the main band featured on this particular front cover of Uncut are represented as an enjoyable and vintage band. The way the colour is edited into the black and white photo connotes the vintage aspect of the representation. The vintage connotation is backed up with the font used for the tagline "The Kinks". The enjoyable connotation is from the way the are represented in the photo itself i.e. they are smiling and laughing. This a direct contrast to a magazine such as NME where they are represented as not caring about what people think.

Language:

Unlike in NME this contents page contains only one image. This image continues with the theme of retro i.e. the photo is black and white. However similar to NME the main colours are dark (black and white), and like NME the other dominant colour is red. This contents page does contain the other conventions such as cover stories with more information, the mention of all regulars, the page numbers, date and issue number.

Ideology:

The relationship between the phot and it's caption is quite ironic. The photo/article is about Primal scream yet the photo is the absolute opposite. The dominance of black and white correlates with the theme of the front cover of the magazine which is very much retro/classic.

Representations:

The featured artists are not current bands therefore the representations of the magazine are that it is there to cover old/classic bands. The photo represents the artist as angry and similar to how bands are represented in NME the quite rebelious and void of caring what other people think about them.

L.I.I.A.R Analysis of other music magazines (Part 1)

L.I.I.A.R Analysis of NME Front cover.

Language:

The main image consists of the two band members back to back, looking down the camera. Both members are wearing black clothing and are trying to look as if they don't care and possibly quite intimidating. This connotes that they don't care and that they are rebelling against mainstream music. They are trying to look intimidating because it connotes that they are trying to scare the rest of the music world. The masthead is large so that it can be seen from far away. It's in red because red connotes power. However as the colour scheme is black and red, it also connotes rebellious behaviour, which is expressed through the music within the magazine. The left third contains the majority of information, mainly the cover lines. In the bottom right is the price, barcode, issue number, date and price.

Institution:

The publisher of NME magazine is a company called IPC media. IPC media are one of the largest publication companies in the UK. They produce over 60 iconic media brands. With print alone they reach 26 million UK adults and 20 million visit the website every month. Source: http://www.ipcmedia.com/
Though they might be only a large publication within the UK, their products are large globally, with NME one of the most successful music magazines worldwide.

Ideology:

The morals of the image on the front cover are that they are rebellious. Through the facial expressions you can connote that they don't care, they have confidence in their own ability so nothing else matters. NME is known to have an ideology/attitude of I don't care what you think. The colour scheme consists of two main colours red and black. These two colours are very powerful and deep in meaning. They convey the message that they are passionate about their music genre. The artists on the front cover (the band The Last Shadow Puppets) are relatively young and therefore create a target audience; this is similar in a magazine such as cult were they focus on an older generation by talking about 'classic' bands.

Audience:

This magazine is clearly aimed at music fans. According to IPC Media the company that publishes the magazine, the brand NME reaches "one million music fans every week" and is particularly aimed at fans of music outside of the mainstream the IPC Media website says: "coverage of the very best in contemporary music".

Representation:

Representation is the key to all music magazines. How the magazine portrays the artists (mainly through images) tells the audience a lot about the ideology of the magazine and also what genre the band fit into. From the image on this front cover you would connote that the band The Last Shadow Puppets are quite arrogant/confident and that they are apart of the indie music genre. This is represented through the clothes they are wearing, and the pose they are showing i.e. back to back, stood tall and upright.

Language:

The title of the page is at the top of the page "Inside this week" and is accompanied with the date. These follow the conventions of magazines. On the seven main articles there is a picture of the artist and a quote from the article. The main story has the largest picture and dominates the contents page. The contents page doesn’t particularly have a colour scheme as it is very black and white. Similar to their outlook on music: you will either like it or not, we don't care. There are pictures of artists performing live as well as on a set, yet again this is a convention of magazine contents pages. The articles are all accompanied with the page number of the article. The font is very clear and visible. An advertisement also features at the bottom of the page.

Ideology:

The genre of the music is portrayed effectively with the photos on the contents page. All of the photos lack colour, which connotes rebellion which shows confidence in their music. These are components of this style/genre of music. The contents page is straightforward and to the point. This is appropriate for this genre because this genre is seen to try and promote just the music not the publicity that mainstream music provides.

Audience:

According to IPC Media the company that publishes the magazine, the brand NME reaches "one million music fans every week" and is particularly aimed at fans of music outside of the mainstream the IPC Media website says: "coverage of the very best in contemporary music". This is reinforced by the artists you see have been interviewed, as Kanye West is the only mainstream artist on the contents page.

Representation:

The photos of the artists include action shots of artists which connotes a proactive image of this music genre. All the photos are very dark in terms of colour, which is a convention of rock music.

Language:

The double page spread is separated very clearly into two pages. One page is dominated by the image of the band Beady Eye. The other page contains an article about the band. The photo consists of the band walking through a gate which contains bars. The connotations of this are that they are breaking free from the restraints of mainstream music. Yet again the photo is very dark; there is a distinct lack of colour. If there is any colour it is a dark green, which has connotations of envy.

Ideology:

The pull quote from the article: "Beady Eye have just about done enough to ensure that the nation's pupils are still trained on them".  This shows that Beady Eye are a powerful band with a lot of influence within this genre. The photo has very important, strong connotations. The photo is a low angle shot of the band walking through the gates. The connotations of this are that the band have power and that they are breaking through and that they are a new hope for this genre to be the focus of music again.

Audience:

According to IPC Media the company that publishes the magazine, the brand NME reaches "one million music fans every week" and is particularly aimed at fans of music outside of the mainstream the IPC Media website says: "coverage of the very best in contemporary music". This is highlighted that Beady Eye a band outside of the mainstream audience have warranted having a double page spread of their own.

Representation:

Arrogance is theme of the band covered in this magazine. This is represented through the image and the stereotypes of Liam Gallagher. Yet again there is no colour so therefore the representations are very serious.

Genre for my music magazine, Key Features of the genre, Other magazines of this genre.

My chosen genre for my music magazine will be Indie pop/ Indie rock, but will cover all artists who are up and coming outside of mainstream music. My initial idea for my front cover is to have an Indie folk duet as the main image. One of the main features of a music magazine is that through the image and the ideology of the title you can immediately appeal to a certain audience. My magazine will be aimed at the same type of audience as NME. They promote bands and music from outside of the mainstream arena. A good eample of an Indie band that are successful and have featured numerous times in NME are The Arctic Monkeys. Below is a picture of the lead singer from The Arctic Monkeys whilst in his other band The Lst Shadow Puppets which identifies what their image consists of.

My initial idea for the title of my music magaine is 'Turn it on'. I hae chosen this for three reasons. Turn it on is a song by Franz Ferdinand who are a band who have been successful within my chosen genre. Secondly Turn it on connotes turning music on which is the point of this magazine. I want up and coming artists in this genre to be listened to, so mainstream doesn't take over. Finally I'm thinking of choosing Turn it on because when your trying to improve something you have to turn on your performance.
Below are more images from within the Indie music genre:

Oasis lead singer Liam Gallagher. This is a very powerful photo. It has many connotations. It is a powerful photo the connotations of the 'v' sign is that he doesn't care what anybody else thinks. The long hair and sunglasses also connote a rebelious side, which is often seen from Liam Gallagher.

The band Franz Ferdinand. These are also an indie/rock band and this photo connotes that they are having a good time playing thier music, which is what music is about.

The Kaiser Chiefs' second album cover. As the album cover is fairly plain, it is almost like they are saying that listen to the music we need nothing else.

Mumford and sons and their instruments. This picture shows their talent. It does this by showing the amount of instruments they can play, which shows their many talents.

L.I.I.A.R Evaluation

L.I.I.A.R Evaluation

Language:

For my final product I think I found a good font for my masthead. I think it is bold eye-catching font that will attract customers and an audience when on a magazine rack. I think the masthead does lack a certain iconography, so that if you were to see the font you would immediately think of 'Sporting Elite', but I think the @Wyke does have a certain amount of iconography. My main image follows the brief as it is a MCU. His face is clearly visible and he is making eye contact audience. The colour scheme is very boring. This is because it only has 1 predominant colour. This is an area that would need to be addressed. My anchorage is clearly visible because it is larger font than the other cover lines. However the actual words could be more of a slogan. The front cover does also contain all other needed information such as the barcode, price, issue number and date. My masthead has been adapted from the original Wyke sporting elite. I felt this was too long and the change with @Wyke at the end is unique and that very few if any magazines have this. I felt far more comfortable constructing my front cover on Photoshop this time compared to our previous task. My front cover does fail to include any enticing competitions or teasing cover lines, which would attract readers. I also don’t use many thumbnail images.

Institution:

I chose to produce a magazine about college sport. I did this because I felt it was more unique to everyone else's idea's therefore it would hit a whole in the market. I also chose this genre for my college magazine because it's what I feel most comfortable writing about. A sports college magazine would attract a wider audience outside of the college as the general public that are interested in sport would be interested in the magazine as well, because a sport magazine isn't exclusive to a certain age group. Despite this there is an obvious target audience. If this magazine was being published by a publisher who normally does regular college magazines, it hits a more specific target audience. Though this magazine has a more specific audience, it would also create a problem for the publisher, trying to appeal to the average college student. I think the type of Distribution Company that would produce and distribute my magazine would also distribute magazines such as FourFourTwo or MOTD magazine, because the genres of the magazines are the same.

Ideology:

I think my magazine portrays Wyke to be a very positive place and successful at sport. I think this connotes positivity as in both images the models are laughing, and appear to be having a good time. I think the cover line "Wyke 4th team goes top!" promotes a successful side about the college that even the 4th team are good. On the contents page it also shows how the basketball and netball teams have won matches which again belongs to the semantic field that Wyke are successful at sport. I could however have used more images of teams in action to show success. I could also have taken pictures of the facilities to show what great playing areas Wyke have. I think that realistically because of it being a college magazine the people involved in producing the magazine would be within the local community, probably within Wyke. This means that it connotes that Wyke students are hardworking.

Audience:

I think it is audience from my front cover who my target audience is. With the masthead being "Sporting Elite" it's self-explanatory. Basically the magazine is aimed at anybody who has an interest in sport and in particular college sport. I could be more interactive with the audience by having a competition or an email section to the magazine. I think that the lack of a second colour could fail to draw the attention of the audience. I also think that by image alone the audience would struggle to indicate what genre of magazine it is. I think the magazine does provide an opportunity for niche audiences as there are many different types of sport which will be covered in the magazine. With each sport there is a new different audience. I think the majority of my audience belong to the DE level of the socio-economic groups. These are the semi and unskilled workers.

Representation:

I wanted the students involved on my front cover to represent the college as positive happy people. I wanted them to look like this because it represents the college and the college sports to be fun and enjoyable. I think I achieved this. The model in the main image is smiling/laughing, and the smaller image which accompanies one of the cover lines also has both students laughing and enjoying themselves. I did want the photo's to be honest and I believe they are as they were not told to pose in this way. I would be critical that neither picture represent the students as part of a sports team. I did have another image for the main image which linked him to be a footballer, however it wasn't a MCU which meant it wouldn't have met the criteria on the brief. I don’t think any of my images on the front cover, in particular, stereotype any people who play sports. However I think through the group of people I have taken pictures of I believe you get a stereotypical image of a teenager. I think my title ‘Sporting Elite’ has a denotation of being about sport which immediately targets a particular audience. The connotation of ‘Sporting Elite’ is that it is a magazine about the best for the best. Realistically the people who would read this magazine would only be from the local area. It definitely wouldn’t reach an international market as people from main land Europe or Asia are not going to be interested in how Wyke’s 4th team are performing.

Audience Feedback

The brief audience feedback I have recieved is quite positive. They indicated in particular that they liked the font of the masthead and the colour of the font. Because it's red and bold they said it would stand out on a magazine rack.
Despite the positives there was a strong consensus that the background is quite boring. I agree however, on a magazine such as FourFourTwo the background is often plain so that the main image becomes more important. They also said that without reading it, the image doesn't connote sport.
They also liked the way I seperated the magazine and the website. Though they did say the website sounded quite empty.

An internet launch

To launch my magazine on the internet I would advertise on a variety of sites. I would produce a video advertisement for Youtube. I would also use social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter. This is because the majority of my target audience for my magazine will use these sites.

I would need to make sure that my magazine had unique qualities compared to the internet site so that I could make money through sales. I would make sure that the magazine had exclusive interviews and particular special features that weren't included on the website. The website would contain more digital media such as video highlights from sporting matches.

Final product

contents page draft 2

The colours match my colour scheme. The writing is less integrated with the phot's but is less seperated from the photo's.

First contents page draft

The colour scheme doesn't match any of my front cover drafts. There are too many spaces on the page. Photos are integrated with the writing i.e the phot's match the bullet point.

2nd draft with photoshop

Need more of a background. The colours are too plain it's generally too boring. The 'photoshopping' isn't very good on the model.

Price

As my target audience is between 16-19 year olds the price cannot be too steep otherwise the students wont be able top afford the magazine. I would produce the magazine twice a month therefore a price of £1.99 each issue is reasonable.

Target Audience

The target audience for my magazine is college students in particular the magazine will be aimed at sport students. I have chosen this because sport is an area in which I am comfortable talking about. It is also something that I can easily produce a medium close up photo of for my front cover. The age range of target audience for this magazine is 16-19 years old because this is the age group which attend college. By producing a magazine about sport, other people outside of the college environment would still be interested in buying the magazine because it has a neutral topic of interest. The target audience is an E demographic.

Task 3: Identify and explain choice of college to feature in my preliminary task.

GoAnimate.com: task 3 by Josh Worthington

Through this video I have identified and explained which college I have chosen for my preliminary task. I have chosen Wyke as my college for the preliminary task. I picked Wyke because of several reasons. They are:
  • Accessability-Due to the task being limited time, chosing Wyke gives me more opportunities to chose take photo's
  • I'm a student at Wyke so I know what happens here
  • Students at Wyke are hard-working, polite and achieve good grades which correlates with the ethos of the magazine

Analysis of a college magazine (2)

Language
The masthead on this particular magazine isn’t very clear. However this can easily be recognised to mean Wyke entertainment (the title of the magazine). All writing on the splash is very clear and also part of a colour scheme which makes it easy for the reader to associate the magazine with Wyke 6th form. The anchorage on this front cover stands out as opposed to the ‘COLLEGE’ magazine. The main image is again a medium long shot of a female student; this follows the conventions of a magazine front cover. All cover lines are very engaging with the target audience, by using the repetition of Wyke. This front cover also follows typical magazine conventions of having a barcode the date and issue number as well as the website.
Institution
Because it is also a college magazine the institution analysis will be the same:

The institution is the group that control the production process. From the front cover you can assume that the institution that produced the front cover is associated in some way with college. This is because a large publication company would have no interest in producing a college magazine. This is because there would be a very small profit as the target audience is relatively small. Therefore it is fair to assume that it is the college itself that has produced the magazine. Due to the production company having a smaller budget than that of a company producing a national or global magazine, the magazine will look cheaper; this could be as simple as the type of paper or type of camera used. Also because the target audience is limited the stories in the magazines can be more particular and more specific to particular pupil/teachers and events.

Ideology
Ideology is the meaning and ideas of the text. This particularly aims to engage the reader. All the cover lines are stories that involve the potential readers in some way. The ‘model’ appears as an everyday student. This achieved by a use of mise-en-scene with the folder being in one hand. Also with the use of cinematography it looks like the ‘model’ has just been stopped on her way to lesson. This effect is made by other students being in the background. The front cover is the main way to entice the audience to buy the magazine. This particular splash focuses on creating a bond with the students. They do this with the cover lines that encourage communication with people at the college e.g. “Wyke worries: Wyke’s very own agony aunt and also the website is clearly visible.

Audience
The audience is again made clear from the splash. The target audience is obviously students of Wyke 6th Form College. Many factors indicate this. One factor is that the main image is a student. Also the main cover lines are about student life and or problems. Another reason is that the website on the magazine is the college email. More obviously you can connote that the magazine is for Wyke as you can see that W.E stands for Wyke entertainment. This magazine is clearly meant to be read and then there is meant to be an interaction between reader and the production company.
Representation
Representation is all about the individual/groups that appear in the text and about how they’re portrayed. Wyke Entertainment magazine is portrayed by the student in the main image. The life of a student is portrayed as being hard-work this is implied with the ‘model’ holding a folder full of work. Wyke is also portrayed as being a very helpful community about offering the opportunity of interaction as well as providing opportunities such as getting your articles published in the magazine. This reward/competition also gives a certain prestige about the magazine. The main story still has a mystery about the story. This is a clever representation about this particular story which becomes a tease story. This story is anchoring the main image so you immediately wonder what she has done surrounding a hunger strike.
