L.I.I.A.R Evaluation
Language:
For my final product I think I found a good font for my masthead. I think it is bold eye-catching font that will attract customers and an audience when on a magazine rack. I think the masthead does lack a certain iconography, so that if you were to see the font you would immediately think of 'Sporting Elite', but I think the @Wyke does have a certain amount of iconography. My main image follows the brief as it is a MCU. His face is clearly visible and he is making eye contact audience. The colour scheme is very boring. This is because it only has 1 predominant colour. This is an area that would need to be addressed. My anchorage is clearly visible because it is larger font than the other cover lines. However the actual words could be more of a slogan. The front cover does also contain all other needed information such as the barcode, price, issue number and date. My masthead has been adapted from the original Wyke sporting elite. I felt this was too long and the change with @Wyke at the end is unique and that very few if any magazines have this. I felt far more comfortable constructing my front cover on Photoshop this time compared to our previous task. My front cover does fail to include any enticing competitions or teasing cover lines, which would attract readers. I also don’t use many thumbnail images.
Institution:
I chose to produce a magazine about college sport. I did this because I felt it was more unique to everyone else's idea's therefore it would hit a whole in the market. I also chose this genre for my college magazine because it's what I feel most comfortable writing about. A sports college magazine would attract a wider audience outside of the college as the general public that are interested in sport would be interested in the magazine as well, because a sport magazine isn't exclusive to a certain age group. Despite this there is an obvious target audience. If this magazine was being published by a publisher who normally does regular college magazines, it hits a more specific target audience. Though this magazine has a more specific audience, it would also create a problem for the publisher, trying to appeal to the average college student. I think the type of Distribution Company that would produce and distribute my magazine would also distribute magazines such as FourFourTwo or MOTD magazine, because the genres of the magazines are the same.
Ideology:
I think my magazine portrays Wyke to be a very positive place and successful at sport. I think this connotes positivity as in both images the models are laughing, and appear to be having a good time. I think the cover line "Wyke 4th team goes top!" promotes a successful side about the college that even the 4th team are good. On the contents page it also shows how the basketball and netball teams have won matches which again belongs to the semantic field that Wyke are successful at sport. I could however have used more images of teams in action to show success. I could also have taken pictures of the facilities to show what great playing areas Wyke have. I think that realistically because of it being a college magazine the people involved in producing the magazine would be within the local community, probably within Wyke. This means that it connotes that Wyke students are hardworking.
Audience:
I think it is audience from my front cover who my target audience is. With the masthead being "Sporting Elite" it's self-explanatory. Basically the magazine is aimed at anybody who has an interest in sport and in particular college sport. I could be more interactive with the audience by having a competition or an email section to the magazine. I think that the lack of a second colour could fail to draw the attention of the audience. I also think that by image alone the audience would struggle to indicate what genre of magazine it is. I think the magazine does provide an opportunity for niche audiences as there are many different types of sport which will be covered in the magazine. With each sport there is a new different audience. I think the majority of my audience belong to the DE level of the socio-economic groups. These are the semi and unskilled workers.
Representation:
I wanted the students involved on my front cover to represent the college as positive happy people. I wanted them to look like this because it represents the college and the college sports to be fun and enjoyable. I think I achieved this. The model in the main image is smiling/laughing, and the smaller image which accompanies one of the cover lines also has both students laughing and enjoying themselves. I did want the photo's to be honest and I believe they are as they were not told to pose in this way. I would be critical that neither picture represent the students as part of a sports team. I did have another image for the main image which linked him to be a footballer, however it wasn't a MCU which meant it wouldn't have met the criteria on the brief. I don’t think any of my images on the front cover, in particular, stereotype any people who play sports. However I think through the group of people I have taken pictures of I believe you get a stereotypical image of a teenager. I think my title ‘Sporting Elite’ has a denotation of being about sport which immediately targets a particular audience. The connotation of ‘Sporting Elite’ is that it is a magazine about the best for the best. Realistically the people who would read this magazine would only be from the local area. It definitely wouldn’t reach an international market as people from main land Europe or Asia are not going to be interested in how Wyke’s 4th team are performing.
