L.I.I.A.R
Language:
This particular magazine 'Uncut' is aimed at fans of 'classic/retro' music. We know this because the original image was black and white which connotes that this is a picture of an old band from a past era. The main tagline which is linked to the main image is The Kinks, anybody with any music knowledge will know these are a band from the past. All of the other cover lines on the front cover are about other artists from the past e.g. 'Springsteen'. The masthead on this front cover is red. Again red connotes passion but it is mainly used because it is a very bold colour. Uncut is a short and memorable title. Most of the other conventions of a magazine front cover appear on the left third, including a quote from the interview with lead singer of The Kinks Ray Davies "I sound crazy. So be it...".
Institution:
The institution/publisher of this magazine of this magazine is the same as NME. It is IPC Media. On the IPC Media website it says: "Uncut is the UK’s most authoritative music and movie magazine. Uncut celebrates all that is great in rock and film, both new and old, cult and classic". IPC Media are again a very large company. They publish magazines of many different genres. A couple of other examples are 'World Soccer' and 'TV and Satellite'.
Ideology:
From the front cover you would connote that the morals and ideology of Uncut magazine is that they are into promoting all things cult and classic. This is implied by the cover lines and pictures of which the majority feature classic music artists. You would assume that the main target audience are that of the older generation. This is mainly again down to the mention of classic bands. One of the main colours is yellow. This is used for the main tagline and the colour of the clothes one of the band members is wearing. Yellow has a connotation of happiness, which portrays that this magazine is promoting this age of music. It's saying when this music was in the public eye, it was a good time for music.
Audience:
The target audience are fans of classic/cult music fans. The IPC Media website says how Uncut is great for celebrating all that is great in rock. Therefore the magazine is clearly for fans of rock music particularly classic rock. Also through the use of font which is classic and old fashioned you can connote that it is for fans of classic/old fashioned music.
Representation:
The Kinks who are the main band featured on this particular front cover of Uncut are represented as an enjoyable and vintage band. The way the colour is edited into the black and white photo connotes the vintage aspect of the representation. The vintage connotation is backed up with the font used for the tagline "The Kinks". The enjoyable connotation is from the way the are represented in the photo itself i.e. they are smiling and laughing. This a direct contrast to a magazine such as NME where they are represented as not caring about what people think.
Language:
Unlike in NME this contents page contains only one image. This image continues with the theme of retro i.e. the photo is black and white. However similar to NME the main colours are dark (black and white), and like NME the other dominant colour is red. This contents page does contain the other conventions such as cover stories with more information, the mention of all regulars, the page numbers, date and issue number.
Institution:
The institution/publisher of this magazine of this magazine is the same as NME. It is IPC Media. On the IPC Media website it says: "Uncut is the UK’s most authoritative music and movie magazine. A couple of other examples are 'World Soccer' and 'TV and Satellite'.
Ideology:
The relationship between the phot and it's caption is quite ironic. The photo/article is about Primal scream yet the photo is the absolute opposite. The dominance of black and white correlates with the theme of the front cover of the magazine which is very much retro/classic.
Representations:
The featured artists are not current bands therefore the representations of the magazine are that it is there to cover old/classic bands. The photo represents the artist as angry and similar to how bands are represented in NME the quite rebelious and void of caring what other people think about them.
